Bridging necking and shear-banding mediated tensile failure in glasses

چکیده

The transition between necking-mediated tensile failure of glasses, at elevated temperatures and/or low strain-rates, and shear-banding-mediated failure, high is investigated using experiments on metallic glasses atomistic simulations. We experimentally simulationally show that this occurs through a sequence macroscopic patterns, parametrized by the ultimate strength. Quantitatively analyzing spatiotemporal dynamics preceding large scale simulations corroborated experimental fractography, reveals how collective evolution mutual interaction shear-driven plasticity dilation-driven void formation (cavitation) control various modes. In particular, we find global size largest cavity in loading direction exhibits nonmonotonic dependence temperature fixed strain rate, which rationalized terms interplay shear- plasticity. also scales with cross-sectional area undeformed sample. These results shed light highlight need to develop elasto-plastic constitutive models incorporating both irreversible processes.

Shear banding and flow-concentration coupling in colloidal glasses.

We report experiments on hard-sphere colloidal glasses that show a type of shear banding hitherto unobserved in soft glasses. We present a scenario that relates this to an instability due to shear-concentration coupling, a mechanism previously thought unimportant in these materials. Below a characteristic shear rate γ(c) we observe increasingly nonlinear and localized velocity profiles. We attr...

Suppression of Shear Banding and Transition to Necking and Homogeneous Flow in Nanoglass Nanopillars

In order to improve the properties of metallic glasses (MG) a new type of MG structure, composed of nanoscale grains, referred to as nanoglass (NG), has been recently proposed. Here, we use large-scale molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of tensile loading to investigate the deformation and failure mechanisms of Cu64Zr36 NG nanopillars with large, experimentally accessible, 50 nm diameter. Our ...

The Critical Criterion on Runaway Shear Banding in Metallic Glasses

The plastic flow of metallic glasses (MGs) in bulk is mediated by nanoscale shear bands, which is known to proceed in a stick-slip manner until reaching a transition state causing catastrophic failures. Such a slip-to-failure transition controls the plasticity of MGs and resembles many important phenomena in natural science and engineering, such as friction, lubrication and earthquake, therefor...

Shear-banding Induced Indentation Size Effect in Metallic Glasses

Shear-banding is commonly regarded as the "plasticity carrier" of metallic glasses (MGs), which usually causes severe strain localization and catastrophic failure if unhindered. However, through the use of the high-throughput dynamic nanoindentation technique, here we reveal that nano-scale shear-banding in different MGs evolves from a "distributed" fashion to a "localized" mode when the result...

The Deformation of Nano-whiskers of Mono-crystalline Copper: Shape Effect, Properties, Shear Banding and Necking

This paper discusses some theoretical aspects in deforming nano-whiskers of monocrystalline copper by uniaxial tension. With the aid of the molecular dynamics analysis, the present study revealed that the behaviour of a nano-whisker is very sensitive to its size, crystal orientation and geometry. The most stable surface is with (111) atomic structure and the most reliable whisker for testing is...
